It has unbelievable scenery that you just have to drink in for yourself.
If you are interested in getting in touch with nature, this is where you want to be. See over 13,000 plant species, 870 different kinds of birds, 4,500 species of butterflies and almost 400 different kinds of reptiles and amphibians. The waters have more than 1600 kinds of fresh and salt-water fish. Other animals you are sure to see are monkeys, sloths, geckos, lizards and iguanas. It is the world’s hummingbird capital to over 52 species of these beautiful little birds.
In a tribute to its natural resources, 25% of the country is protected parks and rainforests. It is an eco-friendly destination and has more than a dozen volcanoes, five of which are active. These areas are perfect for the hiker in you. It has rich, lush vegetation growing from its fertile soil that yields coffee, bananas, chocolate and yes, it has vanilla farms.
Rice and beans is a staple, augmented with a blend of cuisine that is Native American, Spanish and even some South African influence. Tamales and other corn-made products are a strong point in our cooking. Costa Rica is home to a small population of just under 5 million people.
